वैशंपायन उवाच ततो विवाहे निर्वृत्ते स राजा शंतनुर्नृपः तां कन्यां रूपसंपन्नां स्वगृहे संन्यवेशयत्
Vaiśampāyana said: O king! After the marriage was over, King Śāntanu instated the beautiful lady in his own house.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! विवाह संपन्न होने के बाद, राजा शांतनु ने उस सुंदर महिला को अपने घर में स्थापित किया।

ततः शांतनवो धीमान्सत्यवत्यामजायत वीरश्चित्राङ्गदो नाम वीर्येण मनुजानति
Then Satyavatī bore Śāntanu a wise and brave son named Citrāṅgadā. He was superior to all men in valour.
तब सत्यवती ने शांतनु को चित्रांगदा नामक एक बुद्धिमान और बहादुर पुत्र को जन्म दिया। वह वीरता में सभी पुरुषों से श्रेष्ठ था।
Then Satyavatī again bore the powerful king another son. He was named Vicitravīrya and he became a great archer.
तब सत्यवती ने फिर से शक्तिशाली राजा को एक और पुत्र उत्पन्न किया। उसका नाम विचित्रवीर्य रखा गया और वह एक महान धनुर्धर बन गया।

अप्राप्तवति तस्मिंश्च यौवनं भरतर्षभ स राजा शंतनुर्धीमान्कालधर्ममुपेयिवान्
O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Before he could become an adult, the wise King Śāntanu succumbed to the law of destiny.
हे भरत वंश में बैल! इससे पहले कि वह वयस्क हो पाता, बुद्धिमान राजा शांतनु नियति के नियम के आगे झुक गये।

स्वर्गते शंतनौ भीष्मश्चित्राङ्गदमरिंदमम् स्थापयामास वै राज्ये सत्यवत्या मते स्थितः
Bhīṣma was always obedient to Satyavatī. When Śāntanu went to heaven, he instated Citrāṅgadā, chastiser of enemies, on the throne.
भीष्म सदैव सत्यवती के आज्ञाकारी थे। जब शांतनु स्वर्ग गए, तो उन्होंने शत्रुओं को दंडित करने वाले चित्रांगदा को सिंहासन पर बिठाया।

स तु चित्राङ्गदः शौर्यात्सर्वांश्चिक्षेप पार्थिवान् मनुष्यं न हि मेने स कंचित्सदृशमात्मनः
Through his valour, Citrāṅgadā defeated all the kings. He could not find anyone equal to himself among men.
चित्रांगदा ने अपने पराक्रम से सभी राजाओं को परास्त कर दिया। मनुष्यों में उसे अपने समान कोई न मिला।
When he had defeated all gods, men and āsura-s, the powerful king of the gāndharva-s, who bore the same name as him, came to him. On the fields of Kurukṣetra, a great battle took place between these two powerful warriors, the king of the gāndharva-s and the king of the Kuru-s.
जब उसने सभी देवताओं, मनुष्यों और असुरों को हरा दिया, तो गंधर्वों का शक्तिशाली राजा, जिसका नाम उसके जैसा ही था, उसके पास आया। कुरुक्षेत्र के मैदान में, इन दो शक्तिशाली योद्धाओं, गंधर्वों के राजा और कुरु-राजा के बीच एक महान युद्ध हुआ।
In that great duel, characterized by a shower of weapons, the gāndharva used superior powers of delusion to kill the supreme among the Kuru-s.
हथियारों की बौछार वाले उस महान द्वंद्व में, गंधर्वों ने कुरुवंशियों के सर्वोच्च को मारने के लिए भ्रम की श्रेष्ठ शक्तियों का उपयोग किया।
Having killed Citrāṅgadā, the best of the Kuru-s and one who yielded wonderful bows and arrows, the gāndharva went to heaven.
कुरुश्रेष्ठ और अद्भुत धनुष-बाण चलाने वाले चित्रांगद को मारकर वह गंधर्व स्वर्ग चला गया।
O king! When that tiger among men, the one with a lot of energy, was killed, Śāntanu's son Bhīṣma performed the funeral rites.
हे राजा! जब वह अत्यंत शक्तिशाली मनुष्यराज बाघ मारा गया तो शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म ने उसका अंतिम संस्कार किया।

विचित्रवीर्यं च तदा बालमप्राप्तयौवनम् कुरुराज्ये महाबाहुरभ्यषिञ्चदनन्तरम्
Then the mighty-armed one instated Vicitravīrya as the king of the Kuru kingdom, though he was still a child and hadn't attained youth.
तब महाबाहु ने विचित्रवीर्य को कुरु साम्राज्य का राजा नियुक्त किया, हालाँकि वह अभी भी एक बच्चा था और उसने युवावस्था प्राप्त नहीं की थी।
Vicitravīrya always listened to Bhīṣma's words and as a king, ruled the kingdom of his father and grandfather.
विचित्रवीर्य हमेशा भीष्म की बातें सुनते थे और एक राजा के रूप में अपने पिता और दादा के राज्य पर शासन करते थे।

स धर्मशास्त्रकुशलो भीष्मं शांतनवं नृपः पूजयामास धर्मेण स चैनं प्रत्यपालयत्
In accordance with dharma, the king paid homage to Śāntanu's son Bhīṣma, who was skilled in dharma and the sacred texts. In return, Bhīṣma also protected him.
धर्म के अनुसार, राजा ने शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की, जो धर्म और पवित्र ग्रंथों में कुशल थे। बदले में भीष्म ने भी उनकी रक्षा की।
